Rapid filters with drainage distribution system type “Leopold”

The system is adapted for fast filters of a classic design with a spatial drainage and distribution system and the absence of supporting filter layers.

Application

The system is adapted for fast filters of a classic design with a spatial drainage and distribution system and the absence of supporting filter layers. The above-mentioned design features make it possible to regulate the load on the filters and, accordingly, the speed of filtration, and ultimately the productivity of the facilities and the quality of cleaning, by ensuring the uniform distribution of flows in the area of operation of filter loads.

These shortcomings are eliminated by the design of two-chamber drainage devices. In them, there is an optimal uniform distribution of drainage and washing flows over the entire area of the filter.

DRAINAGE REQUIREMENTS

The drains must provide separate backwashing: air blowing and water backwashing, as well as water-air washing with a set water / air ratio, be able to backwash with water only.

Water wash intensity:
  • For drinking water supply systems 30 - 60 m / h (8.3 - 16.6 l / s);
  • For drainage systems 15 - 20 m / h (4.2 - 5.5 l / s).

Air flush intensity:

  • For drinking water supply systems:
  • With a sand filter load of 36 - 60 m / h (10.0 - 16.6 l / s);
  • With a zeolite filter load of 36 - 45 m / h (10.0 - 12.5 l / s);
  • For drainage systems 70 - 90 m / h (19.4 - 25.0 l / s).

The system must be designed in such a way as to prevent the formation of areas of high flow (unevenness of supply), which can lead to shifting of the drainage devices or damage to the filter media.

DESIGN FEATURES

The blocks are recessed and ribbed for structural rigidity. The sides of the blocks are equipped with ribs that provide additional fixation of the blocks when pouring concrete.
The blocks are mechanically attached to each other, forming continuous drainage channels with a length approximately equal to the length/width of the filter. Joints must be sealed and splined for proper sealing. The blocks are equipped with snap-on connections to provide a secure grip and make it easy to assemble and install channels.
The air distribution system includes a supply manifold specially designed to evenly distribute air through tubes supplying air to each drain channel.

Features

Structurally, drainage distribution systems are arranged in the form of ready-made filter modules. When assembled, the system is a densely packed box-section polyethylene modular structure with a special spraying system to distribute air bubbles. The pressure loss is similar to that of supporting gravel beds in classic filter designs.

Depending on the chosen general technological scheme, the filter loading can be single-layer (quartz sand, zeolite) or two-layer (HAV + quartz sand). In addition, the reserve volume of the filter, freed after the rejection of the supporting layers, can be used both to regulate the loading volumes and the height of the water layer above the loading. All of the above provides adjustment of hydraulic loads, adjustment of filtration speed, control of technological modes according to quality indicators.

Features of the drainage system

  • The triangular internal profile of Leopold S and SL drain blocks (and arched for XA blocks) and holes located along the entire length of the upper part of the drain pipe ensure pressure equalization during backwashing and uniform cleaning of the cavities and filter media from the formed contaminants.
  • The special “IMS Cap” top cover to support the filter media eliminates the need for gravel in filters equipped with double transverse drainage channels. Due to the rejection of gravel backfill, the overall depth of the filter is reduced.

The drainage filter system is made of high-strength polyethylene, it is a two-channel type system in which the supply and compensation chambers are arranged in one block. The compensation chamber provides the necessary uniform distribution of pressure and flow from the top of the blocks.

Drainage block modifications

Leopold Type S ® drains

Especially effective for extended areas. The design and channels for collecting water ensure even distribution and the absence of dead zones. Adapted to fit Leopold IMS® 1000 or 200 filter media support systems.

Leopold Type XA® Drains
They provide optimal distribution of air and water thanks to a new type of internal baffles and double water return channels. Construction, without the use of special anchors, where the possibility of lifting blocks is prevented. It is especially effective for the device for extended drains. Adapted to mount Leopold IMS ® 1000 or 200 filter media support systems.

Leopold Type 360 drains
Provides efficient 360° backwashing, cost-effective installation, serviceability, and self-cleaning with great reliability. The system completely eliminates dead zones in the filter media. Leopold Type 360 drainage increases filter cycle time, reduces backwash water consumption, extends load life and reduces energy costs.
The modular design greatly simplifies installation. Special clamping brackets fix the sides and allow access for maintenance of the bottom of the drain.
Patented self-cleaning technology removes deposits that may accumulate at the bottom of the drain.

Recommended maximum drain laying length from the entry point:
  • Type S: 14 - 15 m
  • Type XA: 8.75 m
  • Type SL: 5 m with combined air/water flush
  • Type SL: 14 - 15 m with separate air and water flushing cycles.

Filter media support systems I.M.S.-Cap.

Precision molded plastic construction, produced by sintering granules of UV-resistant high-density polyethylene. Eliminates the need for a gravel backfill layer and eliminates the disadvantages characteristic of drainage layers based on granular porous mineral media.

The total height of the assembled modules:

Block type S: from the base to the top of the I.M.S. - 352 mm.

Block type SL: from the base to the top of the I.M.S. - 252 mm.

Block type XA: from the base to the top of the I.M.S. - 275 mm.
